Title

Shoulder yoke

Description

Wood. 34" x 5". Used to carry water from the well. There were two related objects know as yokes found on early farms. One kind was placed on the necks of oxen when harnessing them to cart or plow. The other type, such as this one, was used by humans to ease the task of carrying two heavy pails of water from a distant pumper well. Both were made of wood.
Shoulder yokes were also used in New England for carrying the sap from maples (for maple syrup).
Leather thongs or cords of rope were tied at both ends. Attached to theses were hooks on which buckets were hung.
