Title
Mortar and pestle
Description
Every family had one or more mortar and pestles in the kitchen. They were used in many ways. Salt came to the house in coarse form and had to be pounded fine. Sugar was either maple or white and was sold in pyramid form, wrapped in purple paper that had to be broken and powdered in a mortar and pestle. Spices such as mace, cinnamon, bark, whole cloves, whole peppers and ginger root had to be pounded to a powder and that took muscle.
