Title

Pie Safe

Subject

Pie safes were kitchen essentials back in the 1800s. They were used to store baked goods and keep them safe from insects,
. rodents and any other small animals that might enjoy nibbling on a pie or fresh baked bread. Holes were punched in the doors and side to keep the air circulating. Some pie safes have discoloration on the legs indicating that owners would set the legs in pans of water to keep ants from crawling up the safe. Many old pie safes were originally painted green or blue or stained red with oxen's blood.
This pie safe was purchased in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The wood has been refinished but the tin is original. The tin has been painted brown. The pie safe is believed to be from the 1840s.
